A 20-something year old navigating her way through the foodie blogosphere with a stack of chocolate krinkles by her side

Steamed Broccoli June 30, 2011

Filed under: Vegetables — chocolatekrinkles @ 5:46 pm

Back in the day, I used to not like veggies. If I saw the color green on my plate, all of a sudden, someone was deathly ill. Anyway, with age comes wisdom more evolved tastes and now, I can’t go a meal without some sort of greenery on my plate.

My favorite go-to, esp with my meat-centric/fish-centric dishes? Steamed broccoli!

Broccoli is a superfood — high in Vitamin C, calcium and dietary fiber. But that’s not why I love it (although, those are all great perks!). It’s just so delicious and goes with everything.

  • 1 bunch of broccoli
  • Lemon juice
  • Extra virgin olive oil

  1. Rinse broccoli and cut into bite size florets
  2. Bring about 1 inch of water to boil in a saucepan with a steamer. Add broccoli to steamer then cover. Reduce heat to medium and let cook for 6-7 minutes. (Personally, I’ve found that the broccoli cooks much sooner than that — about 4 minutes?)
  3. Dress with lemon juice + olive oil/butter, flax seed oil, etc. Your choice!

My choice of dressing: a little bit of EVOO,  tons of lemon juice, and a sprinkling of flax seeds or toasted sesame seeds (depending on what I have on hand).

Such a refreshing side dish — that sometimes turns into an entree in itself if I’m feeling lazy!
